Full-Mouth Reconstruction
Serving Patients from Medford, Klamath Falls, Ashland, Yreka and Central Point
Individuals who have many severely worn, decayed, or damaged teeth are often in need of a full-mouth reconstruction. In contrast to the “smile makeover” which is an elective, primarily cosmetic process, a full-mouth reconstruction typically includes functional, neuromuscular, as well as cosmetic dental procedures. An extensive full-mouth reconstruction may involve coordinated efforts by periodontal and endodontal specialists, general and cosmetic dentists, oral surgeons, and orthodontists.
Am I a candidate for Full-Mouth Reconstruction?
A thorough examination by a qualified dentist will be necessary to determine whether you need a full-mouth reconstruction. If your teeth, jaw, and bite are otherwise healthy, and all you need are more minor procedures such as teeth whitening, veneers, or a crown or two, then you are an unlikely candidate. People who need a full-mouth reconstruction include the following:
- Trauma victims - Individuals who have suffered significant trauma to their teeth, jaw, and other facial structures due to automobile accident, sporting accident, or any other unforeseen circumstances are very likely candidates for reconstruction.
- Individuals with severely worn teeth - Severe wear is usually caused by excessive amounts of gastric acids in the mouth or over-active jaw muscles. Quite often, both conditions are present simultaneously. High acidity in the mouth will chemically erode your teeth while an over-active jaw will mechanically erode your teeth (see our TMD/TMJ page for more information). Anorexics, bulimics, and those predisposed to dry mouth are at heightened risk of acid erosion.
- Advanced tooth decay - Those who suffer from advanced tooth decay due to poor oral hygiene over an extended period of time may need a full restoration, especially if multiple teeth are affected.
- Neuromuscular disorder - Chronic jaw pain, muscle pain, and headaches can be caused by a number of neuromuscular problems including TMD/TMJ. These same problems often lead to further dental complications. In some advanced cases, a full-mouth reconstruction may be necessary.
A full-mouth reconstruction may involve virtually any dental procedure available. Some procedures such as dental implants can take up to a year to complete. Depending on the extent of work that needs to be done, those who undergo a full-mouth restoration should expect the entire process to last several months at least.
