Questions about Sedation Dentistry
Serving Patients from Medford, Klamath Falls, Ashland, Yreka and Central Point
What should I plan for before and after my sedation dental visit?
You will need to take your sedative pill one hour before your scheduled visit. It will begin to make you drowsy within minutes, so it essential that you are escorted to the dentist’s office by an alert, responsible adult.
After your visit, you will need to be driven home where you should plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Be sure not to drink any alcohol or take any other medications until the sedatives have completely worn off. Additionally, do not engage in any strenuous activity or operate a motor vehicle while the sedatives are still in your system.
Some patents experience mild nausea after their sedation dentistry treatment. This is normal. Drinking a non-alcoholic carbonated beverage and lying down should alleviate any nausea. Eating a light snack may also help. If you experience any severe symptoms, be sure to contact your dentist immediately.
Which type of sedation should I choose?
This will depend on how extensive and time-consuming the surgery will be. Procedures that take multiple hours are often done under general anesthesia. Whenever possible, we encourage our patients to choose oral sedation. For shorter, less-invasive procedures, this is often all that is needed. There are many advantages to oral sedation; no needles or breathing apparatuses are necessary, recovery time is quicker, side effects are minimal, and since you will not be completely asleep, you will be able to interact and respond when necessary.
Will I be asleep during the procedure?
Only if you choose IV sedation or if general anesthesia is required. Both of these options are great for longer, more invasive procedures. Oral sedation will not put you to sleep, but you will most definitely be relaxed and free from anxiety.
What will I remember of the procedure?
If all goes as planned, you will remember very little, if anything about the procedure.
Are all dentists qualified to provide Sedation Dentistry?
No. A sedation dentist must go through extensive post-graduate training and become licensed in order to practice sedation dentistry.
If you live in Southern Oregon and have been delaying dental treatment for any reason, we strongly encourage you to contact our qualified sedation dentists today.
