Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (alternately known as TMJ or TMD) is a complex, chronic neuromuscular condition that affects millions of Americans. Unfortunately, most of those who are affected are never diagnosed, nor do they receive treatment for the condition.

Listed below are the more common symptoms of TMD. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, then you are strongly encouraged to arrange a consultation with a neuromuscular dental specialist.

Headaches and Migraines - Overactive jaw muscles or overcompensation due to a misaligned bite can lead to tension headaches, and in some cases, migraines.

Ringing in the ears and fullness of the ear - A misaligned bite can add strain to the muscles and nerves around the ear, causing ringing (tinnitus) or fullness (the sensation that your ears are congested).

Popping or clicking jaw joints - Jaw misalignment can cause the jaw joints to pop and click, often without any noticeable pain.

Tension and pain in the neck, shoulder, and facial muscles - If your jaw is out of alignment, then any muscle related to jaw movement can become strained due to overcompensation.

Dental problems - Overactive jaw muscles can put excessive strain on teeth and cause teeth grinding (bruxism). This often leads to excessive wear, chipped, or cracked teeth. Teeth that are sore, loose, or overly sensitive may also result.

Stiff or locked jaw - Severe bite misalignment can lead to limited jaw movement, often accompanied by severe pain.

Numbness or tingling sensation in the fingers and arms - Excessive tension in the shoulder, neck, and facial muscles can disturb the nerves that extend along the arm and into the fingers.

Depression - Chronic pain caused by TMD can cause significant neuro-chemical changes in the brain and lead to depression. In fact, most TMD sufferers also suffer from depression.

Related problems - Snoring, restricted breathing, and frequent ear infections often accompany TMD.
