What is the difference between an Onlay and a Dental Crown?
An onlay is a more conservative procedure reserved for teeth that are not damaged enough to warrant the placement of a crown. Onlays require very minimal tooth preparation, whereas crowns require that a lot of the natural tooth be removed. In short, a porcelain onlay replaces only a portion of the entire tooth surface, while a crown replaces the entire surface of the tooth.
How do I know which one I will need?
An examination by an experienced cosmetic dentist will be necessary to determine how much restoration is needed, and whether a crown or onlay will be most appropriate.
I see that there are different types of crowns available besides all-porcelain. When are the other types used?
All-metal and porcelain/metal crowns are also available. Both are still used in certain situations. Metal crowns are often preferred for the rear molars. These teeth have to withstand the most force and metal is more durable than porcelain. Rear teeth are also far less visible, so the aesthetic advantage of porcelain is not so much of a consideration. Porcelain/metal crowns serve as a “happy medium” between all-metal and all-porcelain. They are a combination of metal’s durability and porcelain’s aesthetic advantages. Resin crowns are also available, but these tend to have a short life-expectancy, so are not a very common choice.
I had metal crowns put in many years ago but would like to upgrade to porcelain. Is this feasible?
You will need an examination from an experienced cosmetic dentist to determine this. If your crowns have been in place for a long time, chances are they have worn considerably and may be in need of replacement. Replacing your old metal crowns with porcelain is certainly an option, particularly if you want a more natural-looking smile. Whether or not it is necessary or even cost effective, will depend on your budget.
How much do Dental Crowns cost?
Cost will depend heavily on what material the crown is made of. Resin crowns are the most affordable, while metal and porcelain crowns are the most expensive. Depending on the type of crown you choose and the extent of work that needs to be done, you should expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $2000 per crown. Insurance may cover some of the procedure in some cases. Check with your insurance provider, or contact our office to determine your coverage.
