Porcelain Crowns

Medford Porcelain CrownsServing Patients from Medford, Klamath Falls, Ashland, Yreka and Central Point

Porcelain Crowns are an ideal option for those who have a damaged tooth that still has a healthy base structure, but is too damaged for dental bonding or onlays. Crowns may also be used as anchors for dental bridges or as part of a dental implant. A crown covers the entire surface area of an injured or damaged tooth, eliminating future decay while restoring strength and a confident smile.

The aesthetic and functional advantages of today’s advanced ceramics and adhesives make porcelain the material of choice for many dental restorations. In fact, many dental patients with older metal crowns are choosing to replace them with porcelain crowns. It should be noted that while porcelain is the preferred material for most crowns, there are situations (particularly involving the back teeth) where metal crowns or a metal/porcelain hybrid crown is the best option.

The procedure

Placing a crown is a more involved procedure than veneers and inlays/onlays. This is due to the amount of preparation that needs to be done to the damaged tooth. A tooth with severe damage may require a root canal and an extra office visit. If your crowns are part of a dental bridge or implant procedure, then expect additional visits. Either way, you should plan for at least two visits to the dentist’s office.

During your first visit, your tooth will be prepared and an impression of the tooth will be taken. This mold is then sent to the lab where your crown will be manufactured. A temporary crown will be placed on the prepared tooth to be worn until the permanent crown is ready. During your second visit, your dentist will place your permanent crown and perform any final adjustments.

An anesthetic is used during the procedure, particularly during the tooth preparation. Patients may experience mild discomfort as the dentist removes parts of the damaged tooth, though they typically do not feel any pain. Pain medications will be provided to you if necessary, though over-the-counter pain relievers are usually all that is needed.
