Chipped Teeth
Serving Patients from Medford, Klamath Falls, Ashland, Klamath Falls, Yreka and Central Point
As you may well know, a chipped tooth can be the devastating result of an otherwise minor incident while at work or play. Biting down wrong on ice, candy, or any other hard substance is another common cause of chipped teeth. Be aware that a chipped tooth may not only be the result of trauma to the tooth. Cavities and other pre-existing tooth problems often make a tooth susceptible to chipping. If you have suffered a chipped tooth, even a minor chip that causes no noticeable pain, it is strongly recommended that you visit a dentist soon.
For those who have suffered a chipped tooth, there are a number of repair options available. The best option for you will depend on the severity of the chip.
- Crowns - Repair of larger chips and fractures may require a crown. See our dental crowns page for more information.
- Dental Bonding - A good option for larger chips, this involves applying a composite resin to the chipped area to fill it in. Please visit our dental bonding page for complete information.
- Enamel shaping - This procedure is an option when a minor chip has occurred. Your dentist will remove and re-sculpt the tooth enamel around the chipped area, thereby removing the chip. This is an entirely subtractive process, whereas dental bonding and other procedures fill in, cover up, or replace the chipped area.
- Porcelain Veneers - Also a good option for larger chips, veneers are a thin porcelain shell that is permanently bonded to the front of your tooth. The decision whether to use veneers or dental bonding will depend on the tooth being repaired, as well as the extent of the damage. Please visit our porcelain veneers page for more information.
Somewhere along the spectrum of tooth damage, a chip is too severe to be appropriately called a “chip.” If your damaged tooth has resulted in nerve exposure or nerve damage, then a root canal will very likely be necessary. A severely damaged tooth may need to be removed and replaced by an implant or bridge.
It is crucial that a chipped tooth be examined by a dentist in a timely fashion, even if no immediate discomfort is present. Chipped teeth can lead to very serious complications affecting your general health. If you live in Southern Oregon and have suffered a chipped tooth, please contact us today to set up an appointment.
